Nonlinear numerical simulation of rainwater infiltration through road embankments by FEM
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents the results of nonlinear numerical simulations carried out to analyze rainwater infiltration through a road embankment structure using the finite element method (FEM) technique. The analysis of this paper includes a simplification of a crosssectional road embankment located in Santander (Northern Spain) and considers different realistic hydraulic material parameters, according to the relevant literature, in order to study their effect on water movement throughout the section over time. The model solved the nonlinear Richards’ equation using the constitutive relationships of van Genuchten– Mualem. Finally, the analysis of the numerical results reveals four main conclusions: (1) models based on FEM are suitable for analyzing rainwater infiltration in road structures, (2) the hard-shoulder area of the highway represents an important infiltration point for rainwater in road structures, (3) the embankment material can greatly affect the soil’s water content in this part of the road, and (4) the analysis of the soil water retention curve of the embankment material provides relevant information about its hydraulic behavior under unsaturated conditions. Efficiency of Geocell Reinforcement for Using in Expanded Polystyrene Embankments via Numerical Analysis
Abstract—This paper presents a numerical study for investigating the effectiveness of geocell reinforcement in reducing pressure and settlement over EPS geofoam blocks in road embankments. A 3-D FEM model of soil and geofoam was created in ABAQUS, and geocell was also modeled realistically using membrane elements. The accuracy of the model was tested by comparing its results with previous works...
متن کاملGeosynthetic Reinforcement for Embankments over Degrading Discontinuous Permafrost Subjected to Presstressing
Failures of road embankments on discontinuous permafrost commonly occur during thawing of the foundation soil. As an approximation, weak zones created by thawing of discontinuous permafrost can be considered as ‘voids’ within the foundation. Geosynthetic reinforcements have been used to bridge these ‘voids’ and provide support to the embankment fill. This paper presents results of a numerical i...

In this study, the possibility of using a combination of gravel filters with plastic cover to increase water infiltration and soil moisture storage in rainwater catchment systems was investigated. For this purpose, five treatments (with three replications) including control treatment, vegetation removal with filter, vegetation removal without filter, semi-insulated system with filter, an...
متن کاملInvestigating the application of rainfall simulator for designing micro-catchment systems
Rain simulators are suitable tools for research related to the process of erosion and runoff. However, it is possible to use these simulators on other topics as well. For example, in designing the rainwater catchment systems such as micro-catchments for planting trees on slopes, curve pits in pastures, and determining the size of the water collection pond, knowledge of runoff coefficient and vo...
متن کاملTHEORETICAL AND NUMERICAL STUDY ON THE STRENGTHENED STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALLS BY FRP LAMINATES
In this paper, nonlinear behavior of strengthened steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) by FRP laminates theoretically and numerically has been investigated. In the first part, a new method, “the composite-plate frame Interaction (C-PFI) method”, has been introduced to predict the shear behavior of the composite steel plate shear wall systems (CSPSWs). In the second part, several models of one-story ...
